Ukraine’s rail network, known as Ukrzaliznytsia or UZ for short, has always been a source of pride and practicality in the eastern European nation, even before the war. ‘Constant threat’Ukraine's rail network, known as Ukrzaliznytsia or UZ for short, has always been a source of pride and practicality in the eastern European nation. UZ says a further $9 billlon is likely required to repair and modernize the existing UZ network, which at 19,700 kilometers is one of the world’s longest. “Our responsibility is to be a stable partner.”Indeed, despite the war, UZ says it has repaired and renewed 289 kilometers of track in 2023, rebuilt 15 bridges, built 528 new freight cars and repaired around 9,000 others. Britain’s Network Rail and Swiss Federal Railways are providing engineering support to help rebuild damaged infrastructure, while the Global Ukraine Rail Task Force (GURTF) was established in 2022 to raise funds to support Ukrainian rail workers and their families.

As a countermeasure, Ukraine has taken several steps to develop new warfare tech. In electronic warfare, jamming technology can be used to disable drones, suppress radar signals, and render GPS-guided missiles useless. AdvertisementBoth countries are engaged in electronic warfare, but Ukraine's capabilities are harder to assess, The Associated Press reported last year. The US has previously expressed concerns that Russia has been deploying jamming technology to reduce the accuracy of American-made smart bombs. The impacts of Russia's electronic warfare have made quickly seeking and developing technological countermeasures a priority for the Ukrainian government.

MOSHCHUN, Ukraine (AP) — In the humble backyard of a destroyed house, a 13-year-old chops firewood to get ready for winter. His mother, Tetiana Yarema, has been preparing for months as she remembers last winter’s Russian strikes on the energy infrastructure that plunged Ukraine into darkness. For the Yarema family, like millions of other Ukrainians touched by Russia’s war on Ukraine, winter is an especially challenging time. The strikes impacted almost a half of Ukraine’s energy capacity. After a lull of six months, Ukraine's energy system sustained its first attack of the season on Sept. 21, resulting in damage to facilities in the central and western regions, Ukrenergo said.

A Ukrainian company said it made jamming-resistant drones and handed the first 15 to the military. But Russian jamming has made many inoperable and forced operators to get closer to the front lines. These latest drones are upgraded versions of the existing Punisher drone, the company said, which has been used to complete scores of successful missions against Russian forces. Yarema, a Ukrainian soldier helping with the Punisher drone effort, told The New Voice of Ukraine that "the most important thing is that the innovative system is resistant to electronic warfare." One Ukrainian drone operator told the BBC that this has meant they have to move closer to the front lines, putting lives in danger.
